We’re a few weeks into the new year – how are things going so far for you? Perhaps you’re the type who’s hit the ground running, who got back to your desk filled with enthusiasm and ready to put all the 2020 planning you’ve done into action for wedding business success. (If so, yay you!) Or maybe, instead, you spent the last part of 2019 enjoying much-needed time with family and friends, and you haven’t even started your business planning for the year. Well, that’s okay too!

Each January we’re bombarded with messaging about ‘starting strong’. This year particularly, talk of the new decade is all around us. But just because your 2020 planning has gotten off to a late start, doesn’t mean all is lost. Not even close. After all, every day is a good day to start something new.

Setting aside some time to step back and look at where you are and where you’re going will not only give you a valuable ‘big picture’ perspective on your business (we all get a little too close to see the forest for the trees sometimes!), but help you create real, tangible goals instead of vague wishes or resolutions. To help you, I’m going to share the exact process I follow to evaluate where my business is currently at, and to set goals for the coming 12 months. I’ve also created a special 2020 planning workbook to guide you through the process, which you can download HERE.

Let’s get started!

As the saying goes: you can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been!

  • Take some time to review the past year. What have been your biggest highs and lows? What have you learned? Both your successes and your failures will help to guide you on to the next stage.
  • How do you feel about your business right now? Take into account elements like your brand and messaging, as well as finances. Is anything holding you back?
  • What needs to change? If you keep doing things the same way, you’ll always have similar results.

Daydreaming may seem like procrastination, but actually has an important function. Studies show that it has a positive psychological impact on our brains, helping us to solve problems and stay motivated, as well as visualise the path ahead. Give yourself some time to dream, and think about not just where you’d like your business to be in a year, but how you’d like to feel about it. What does wedding business success in 2020 look like to you? Then write down all your goals for the next twelve months, however wild they seem!

Next, choose a word of the year. Think about one word that relates to your vision for 2020 and write it down. Mine is ‘aligned’, because I want to connect and work with clients whose goals and values align with mine in a way that allows me to create the lifestyle I desire for my family and I.

Now it’s time for the fun part! Now that you have an idea of what you want your year to look like, you can set goals and drill down to make them measurable and achievable.

Start with high level goals first:

  • Money: What income does your business need to generate? What profit, and how much will you pay yourself?
  • Sales: Which products or services do you need to sell, and how many of each?
  • Visibility: How are you going to connect with your clients online, in print, and in other ways?

Next, break these high level goals down into achievable actions. For example, if you need to book ten new clients, how many is that per month? Or if you want to get published by your favourite blog or magazine, how are you going to do that, and when do you need to complete the necessary actions? Use these concrete actions to create an overall strategy for your business and marketing activities in 2020.

Finally, create a vision board for your 2020 planning (find out how here). A vision board is a powerful tool that works with your subconscious to help you visualise and then actualise wedding business success. Once you’ve completed it, make sure you keep it somewhere that you will see it regularly. For example, you could hang it in your office, or take a photograph and use it as your desktop or screensaver.

Here’s to a fantastic 2020 for each and every one of you!
